How to Become an IT Professional

The constant changes in technology nowadays have been very rapid since the era of computers and gadgets came into being. As more and more people are trying to adjust and adapt to the changes brought about by technology, a great number of people are also determined to become part of these changes by becoming an IT professional. Becoming an IT professional requires one to have adequate knowledge and determination in pursuing this career.


Like any other careers, a career revolving around technology and innovations entails a lot of preparation to have sufficient educational and skills qualifications. Jobs for IT professionals are in demand nowadays and will be for as long as innovations and technology are needed. Thus, a lot of schools are focusing on offering IT related courses to train students in this field.

Like any other careers out there, training always starts in school. As early as high school, students having an interest in information technology should well-develop their skills and knowledge by performing well in their computer subjects. Most high schools nowadays have incorporated computer and IT related subjects in their curriculum to prepare the students for broader information and training in college. It is also in high school that students should decide for themselves what they really want to do, because there are a lot of areas that one must consider in entering an IT career. After deciding on which area to specialize in, one must then take the initiative to get a bachelor’s degree related to the chosen area.

For a web development and design course, students get to learn how to develop a website from scratch, which involves coding websites with the use of specific programming languages commonly used in web development, as well as implementation of proper and good web design.

Aspiring IT professionals can also be adept on software applications commonly used in computers nowadays. By pursuing a course in Software Engineering, students will be able to acquire knowledge in creating these applications as well as in handling and implementing these applications.

Courses in Computer Hardware and Networking are also available in most universities and schools. These courses focus on studying the different computer parts and peripherals needed for the proper functioning of a computer system. These courses also tackle on computer networking, focusing on the different ways of implementing a computer network, from small networks to complicated and huge ones. One can take up a bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering to acquire knowledge and skills on computer hardware and networking.

Communications Technology is also one of the areas of IT and mostly includes network security, voice and data cabling and wireless communications technologies. Students can take up courses in Electronics and Communications Engineering or a course in Information Technology for knowledge on these areas. A lot of other courses which can also enhance one’s qualification for an IT position include Digital Media and Animation, Computer Science and Computer Programming.

After completing a bachelor’s degree in any of these courses, one can take a master’s degree on some of these courses to further enhance their skills and educational qualifications. Taking certifications are also recommended to help one land an IT position. Such certifications include Certified Cisco Networking Certification (CCNC), Certified Internet Web Design (CIWD), and Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE).
